Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones are trying to stop a worldwide plague in Sony’s intense new trailer for “Inferno,” based on author Dan Brown’s thriller of the same name.

The teaser opens with a man committing suicide off a tower after being told “It appears that you’re out of options,” followed by Hanks’ Robert Langdon character being summoned by the witness to the suicide. Clues lead him to drawings of Dante’s “Inferno” that have been changed.

“Dante defined our conception of hell 700 years ago, but these circles have been altered,” he declares. “‘Dante’s Inferno’ isn’t fiction — it’s a prophecy.”

It turns out that a madman is trying to wipe half the world’s population, and kill Langdon. Langdon, who suffers from amnesia, teams up with Sienna Brooks (Jones), a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories, as he fights for his life.

Ron Howard returns as helmer after directing Hanks in the franchise’s previous installments: “The Da Vinci Code” (2006) and “Angels & Demons” (2009).

Howard and Brian Grazer are producing. David Koepp wrote the script, as he did for “Angels & Demons.” The two previous installments, also adapted from Brown’s novels, grossed more than $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office.

“Inferno” opens on Oct. 14.

Josh Greenstein, president of worldwide marketing and distribution, said in a statement Thursday, “There is tremendous excitement for the franchise as evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive test response. Among all audiences, Inferno scores in the 90s in the top two boxes, and with the core audience of older women, it’s 100%. Once again, Ron Howard really delivered. This movie will be a huge global event.”
